i know it, it's incredible that the biggest leak in US history is getting so little attention, and the little attention that it is given is dominated by flimsy rape allegations, obscuring the REAL NEWS- the concrete evidence of the US's gross violations of human rights in Iraq and afghanistan. this stuff is being purposefully swept under the rug, proving that our mainstream media sources are completely bought out. thanks for keeping us updated as best you can dante!

I wouldn't say it's being swept under the rug, necessarily. The New York Times, for instance, is publishing new summaries of batches of the cables pretty much every day. It's also covering the rape allegations, server issues and bank account freezes, but there's definitely more articles written about and attention paid to the cables themselves. Something interesting to note, though, is how large organizations are telling people to deal with the cables: the US government is telling employees not to read or talk about them, and Columbia University just told all of its poli-sci students aspiring to be diplomats to avoid commenting on the cables in any public forum if they value their future careers. THAT is absolutely ridiculous. This is obviously the largest public policy in recent history and the people who are studying public policy are told to..... ignore it. What else is there to analyze these days?

a good source for information is either democracy now!'s coverage or the guardian, especially the latter whom have been posting tons of analysis.

I could talk about this shit for hours ... lets save it for break ...

I can see how wiki leaks might be a very positive thing by making the government more responsible for its actions. I do believe, though, that society needs order and counter balanced interests. Thinking in this way, what gives wiki leaks the right to decide what is released and what is protected(I am assuming somethings should be protected). While I believe that we should hold our goverment as accountable as possible for its decisions I also believe that wiki leaks cant be left to do whatever it wants. Some institutionalized watchdog organization be set up in its place.

and what gives the government the right to censure when obviously they abuse the trust placed in them as demonstrated by these cables? ...

I agree with you ben, nothing gives the government the right monopolizes this resource(information). As theory states, and as is demonstrated, abuse and corruption thrive in the culture of a monopoly. The government does however have a genuine and important interest in what information is public; i think we can both agree that some information should not be accessible to the Taliban and soulless corporations alike. So what to do? I dont know exactly, as this is a very complicated issue, but here is an idea that does no leave the government castrated at the same time as it dissolves the governments monopoly on information. Perhaps if an international counsel(composed of elected candidates, maybe academics, from various countries)assumed control over wiki links sources and information more multilateral and globally aware decisions could be made on what information should be released.

Matt could you provide a link to the artilce addressing Columbia University

the government gets the right to censure because we get to keep our dollar menus as our economic system devours new markets and resources. it is the assumed social contract we live. but is it worth it?

I just want to clarify that wikileaks is not simply data dumping all of the calsified documents that it recieves. the information that is released by Wikileaks is carefully mulled over. In most media you'll read shit like "Wikileaks’s huge DATA DUMP, including the names of agents and recent diplomatic cables, is INDISCRIMINATE" and Assange is "fighting for a world of total transparency." When the reality is the polar to to the information provided by mainstream media. Check the newest post (assange's arrest) for more info!
