So I did a little more research, (I probably should have made this phone call before, but whatever) and found out from the Mt. Whitney permit people that if we are thru-hiking the JMT starting in Yosemite, that we do not need to enter the lottery, just make a reservation for our start date through the national park. This is not a lottery, and costs only 5$ as opposed to 15$ per person. Unfortunately, the typical starting point for the trail, Happy Isles, is already completely booked for all of July. This leaves us with 2 options, there is another starting point 32 miles up trail from Happy Isles, Lyell Canyon, which has a higher quota for permits/day, and none of July is booked up yet. The other option is to try to get one of the permits allotted to same day or day before hikers. (40% of permits per day are in this category) Possibly we could reserve a date for the Canyon, and then try the day before for the closer starting point, and start there if we can get it, and if not fall back to the other.
This gives us much greater flexibility on our departure dates, because we can reserve any date in July at the other put in.

Also, we can take buses from the take out all the way to yosemite, so we wont have to ferry a car or hitch hike or anything.
sounds great--do you need any help trying to put it together?
regardless of if we do the extra 32 miles this trip is going to be disgustingly awesome, in other words it doesn't matter to me. Ditto to what dante said, if you ever need to delegate some responsibility.... Im sure hed be willing to help :)
