so there seems to be a general consensus that a winter hiking/camping trip would be the shit
lets do it.
what time works best for us??
any ideas??
my friend over here--nick the guy we went climbing with michael said that upper lena lake would be a great short hike-- the lake freezes over and allows people to walk over it???
we should do some research.
check this web site--its a great resource

before christmas would work best for me.
same here. that doesn't give us much time. somewhere between the 17th and the 25th. maybe a 2 nighter or something.
Hmmmm. Chris - I think Dad wanted to have a dinner or something the weekend we get back, either the 18th or 19th, so after that I presume. But I might be able to do after Xmas if my WFR registration falls through - which it might (had a mix up).
I be up for a one nighter ...
How about northern cascades? There are some ridiculous hikes up there, places to came up. Has anyone been up there?
I vote North Cascades. Michael and I hiked through there back in the summer of '06. Of course that was the summer, but from what I've seen from pictures and driving through there in the winter, it looks amazing. On the other hand the Olympics are closer and they never disappoint. Tomorrow my dad and I are going camping, I'll bring a camera and tell you all about it.
it might be cold. just wanna bring that up. we should be sure about forecasts and what not - have any of us done any winter camping btw?
i can tell you a thing or two about camping in snow... said the show off NOLS mountain section graduate. I think it'd be dope. snowshoeing is something i'm very interested in doing, using snow shelters would also be bad ass, but i'm not sure how all of our down bags would fare. (i just don't know if it will be an issue or not)
Other than that, snow hiking is fine, you get used to the cold pretty quick, good boots are a must, salomons or sneakers just wont cut it. And you have to accept the fact that you will be wet for a good amount of the time, but if you're warm, its no biggie.
Apparently Highway 20 is closed in the winter which severely limits our quick and easy access to North Cascades.
One idea is the Olympic Hot Springs. I know Michael had a bad experience last year going there, but with the proper planning, it could be pretty sweet. It's about a 7 mile flat, leisurely hike through the woods. We could camp near the pools and then hike home the next day.
i like the hot springs idea. the base camp for that are would also give us options for other hikes if we felt so inclined.
The hot springs are also part of a loop that goes up on Happy Lake Ridge (or something like that), out of the trees, but it would take another night out, maybe more, especially in the snow.
